Year

Innovation for Sustainable Sheep and Goat Produciton in Europe

Sheep/lamb meat consumption continues to rise worldwide; therefore, efficient strategies to increase flock size are integral to the success of sheep industry. Reproductive management is crucial to increasing the efficiency of sheep breeding programs. The use of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) has the potential to increase efficiency significantly. The implementation of multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) in combination with genomic selection and Artificial Insemination (AI) is the most efficient way to increase genetic gain, and thus increase reproductive efficiency within the Sheep industry.

Developing a Sustainable Lamb Supply Chain in Kazakhistan

Project aim was to develop a more sustainable lamb supply chain and to maximize value within the supply chain through increasing lamb output, improving welfare, reducing production and processing costs, while ensuring lambs remain within retail specification and deliver a consistently high quality eating experience. Prolific dam line and terminal sires of sheep breeds were introduced using Assisted reproductive Technologies.

Cloud Based Precision Flock Management

A Mobile Sheep Manager Software (M-SMS) was developed for commercial lamb production model using cloud architecture that collects and utilizes farm data and responds to the farm management with respect to insights on the operational and financial aspects of the farm. Metadata used in the software is composed of ewe reproductive performance, overall productivity, lamb growing rate, survival rate of newborns, and health status of the flock. The system detects alerts occurring in the farm and makes suggestions for troubleshooting. M-SMS was combined with Cloud Services compounded with Predictive Analytics Services for helping fine-tune flock management and improve operational excellence. Mobile Sheep Manager Software is aimed at sheep farmers who need an easy to use “point and click” solution to keep legislative records, to attain operational guidance and build flock performance data. The product supports for purchase, cull or breed decisions based on targets of flock performance.

Determining ideal age of weaning for different breeds of lambs

Whilst the recommended lamb weaning age is 12 to 14 weeks from the start of lambing, lambs can be weaned at 8 to 10 weeks or even earlier if appropriately fed and managed.. However, in the vast majority of cases, some Animal Welfare Institution does not feel that early weaning is in the best interest of welfare for the lamb. This research looks at the issues surrounding weaning age of lambs and the determine best age for optimum growth and health of lambs. Writing in The Welfare of Sheep, part of the scientifically referenced Animal Welfare series of books it is suggested that weaning before three months may be more traumatic than when lambs are weaned at three months or older, although there is limited published data on this point. This research indicated minimum age for weaning considering the welfare standards can be done in 2.5 months old.

Lamb based infant food Meat characteristics from suckling

lambs for baby food were investigated in this project. Dam-rearing system was used to raise lambs, which is compulsory in organic farming (EU Regulation 1804/1999). can improve carcass quality and affect animal behaviour, which, in turn, is a widely used welfare indicator. The results od were very promising that lambs reared by their mother milk are a great source to provide a reliable way to improve essential fatty acids. Lamb meat raised spesifically for infant contained adequate amount of Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids which postively impact for the optimal neonatal growth and development.
